History and architecture

The baroque chapel, which is a hall building with a turret , was built in 1763 on behalf of Count Joseph Anton von Öttingen-Sötern, head of the Dagstuhl estate , an imperial territory of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation . It is part of the overall complex of Dagstuhl Castle .

In 1964 the chapel was extended by an annex.

In the years 1980 to 1981 the chapel was subjected to a restoration , during which a large mural was discovered and exposed.

Furnishing

inner space

The chapel's furnishings include an altar from 1743. It is a work of the South German late Baroque from the Swabian School and was brought back from his homeland by Count Joseph Anton. The antependium of the altar shows the alliance coat of arms of Count Joseph Anton von Öttingen-Sötern and his wife. On the front of the curved tabernacle there is a representation of the “Lamb of God”, which lies on the book of the “Seven Seals” ( Rev 5 : 1-6  EU ).

On the walls and the ceiling of the interior there are paintings by Countess Octavie de Lasalle von Louisenthal (* 1811; † 1890), which were created between 1839 and 1880. The artist, also popularly known as the “painter countess”, who lived in Dagstuhl Castle, painted scenes from the Bible and the life of Mary in the style of biblical history painting, which can be assigned to the Nazarene school .

One of the works is the painting “Immaculata” ( Immaculate Conception ), flanked by a depiction of two deer at the silver spring ( Ps 42,2  EU ) and a depiction of a pelican ripping open its chest in order to feed the offspring with its flesh save, as well as a large Christmas scene above the entrance.

The reveals of all windows are painted with flowers, floral tendrils, curlicues, cords etc., which were later painted over, but exposed again in 1980/81. In addition, a pictorial representation of part of the Lauretan litany can be seen in each window reveal . The wall painting in the form of a carpet behind the altar, which is 230 cm wide and 360 cm high, was whitewashed for a long time and was also exposed again in 1980/81.

The furnishings also include 14 oil paintings of a Way of the Cross from 1864/65, which were originally painted and donated for de Lasalle's baptistery St. Michael in Lockweiler , but have been in the annex next to the chapel since 1964.
