History and architecture

First church

A previous church was built from 1952 to 1953 according to plans by the architect Aloys Dietrich. The small building consisted of a rectangular nave and a square choir , above which the tower rose. The church stood on a stone base , the plastered walls were divided by perforated windows. The sloping terrain made it possible to create a number of ancillary rooms in the basement. After a while the first structural defects became apparent and the church no longer met the requirements. The building was demolished.

Today's church

The building stands on a high hilltop in the Schreppenberg settlement area. The basement and the tower, which today serves as the sacristy , have been preserved from the previous church . The church was built from 1973 to 1974 according to plans by the architects Legge & Legge-Suwelack . It appears as a free-standing, highly irregular architectural sculpture. All components are faced with black artificial slate, so the conventional division between walls and roofs is canceled. The tall components are structured by narrow windows. On the mountain side, the pent roofs drop down and are cut by a counter-rotating cube . The three all-glass portals are staggered and embedded in the front of the building. Both the deep reveals of the windows and the portals are faced with slate.

Two dark glued wood trusses hung over the chancel span the interior. The higher ceiling above the altar enables concealed lighting. The altar zone is slightly raised. The area around the altar with sediles and ambo is formally set off by a dark floor covering. On the right there is a podium with a parapet. The side chapel is separated by a free-standing pane; on the back it houses the niche with the baptismal area. The seating forms a quarter circle. The walls are uniformly white in focus . The windows are designed as narrow strips, the glass paintings are works by Hermann Gottfried.

The community rooms on the valley side in the basement are lit through relocated glass windows.

Furnishing

  • The altar, the tabernacle stele and the wall cross were designed by Klaus Iserlohe with flat reliefs .
  • The bell from 1768 was cast from tin bronze in Saarburg near Trier. It was made for the former Premonstratensian monastery in Wedinghausen and is dedicated to St. Norbert .
  • Five new bells were cast in the bell foundry Hans August Mark in Brockscheid in 1991, they have the names: Josef, Elisabeth, Maria, Kreuzglocke and Resurrection Bell. The melodic peal sounds in es'-as'-b'-c "-es".
