The Roman Catholic Heilig Kreuz cemetery chapel is located in Unterwesterheim , a district of Westerheim in the Unterallgäu district in Bavaria . The chapel is a listed building.

history

The Heilig-Kreuz cemetery chapel was formerly the Roman Catholic parish church of St. Martin and is a late Gothic building from the 15th century. The nave was demolished in 1807. In the same year, the choir, closed on three sides, was extended by an axis towards the west and provided with a needle cap barrel. The roof turret of the chapel dates from 1843.

Building description

The chapel consists of a choir with two window axes. The choir has a 3/8 ending. The ceiling of the choir is a barrel vault with stitch caps that rest on cornice brackets. There is a gallery on the west side . On the outside of the chapel there are simple buttresses with a water hammer . The roof turret is located above the entrance on the west side. The four-sided ridge turret is finished with a pointed helmet. The porch on the west side with a gable roof covered.

Winged altar of the Holy Cross Chapel in Unterwesterheim

The winged altar in the chapel was probably created by the Memmingen sculptor Thomas Heidelberger on behalf of the abbot of Ottobeuren monastery Kaspar Kindelmann . A crucifixion group with numerous figures is in the center shrine. The two wings of the altar show relief depictions of the finding and rehearsal of the cross. In the extension of the winged altar there are figures of St. Helena and the Emperor Heraclius . To the left and right of it there are figures of the Apostle John and John the Baptist . In the chapel there is a figure of Our Lady from 1470. This figure is modeled on the copper engraving Madonna with the lily of the valley by Master ES , both in posture and in the drapery . The Salvator mundi and the relief depicting the Adoration of the Magi date from around 1600 . The ceiling painting of the chapel with the representation of St. Martin before the Holy Trinity.

In the chapel there are several epitaphs from the late 18th century by former pastors. There is an epitaph from 1809 on the outer wall on the south side.
