Pilgrimage Church of the Holy Cross (Süchterscheid)
The Roman Catholic pilgrimage church Zum Heiligen Kreuz is located in Süchterscheid , a district of the city of Hennef (Sieg) in North Rhine-Westphalia . The core of the church is a Romanesque chapel from the 12th century .
history
The Romanesque Holy Cross Chapel, whose kreuzgratgewölbter choir followed semicircular apse has been preserved is dated in the second half of the 12th century. Around 1688 the chapel received a half-timbered nave. In the Second World War , the chapel was destroyed except for the choir.
There has been evidence of a pilgrimage to the Holy Cross in Süchterscheid since 1506. In this context, on September 22nd, 1506, a benefit for a priesthood was donated by the knight Bertram von Nesselrode, lord of Ehrenstein Castle . A Holy Cross relic in the chapel has only been documented since the second half of the 19th century .
Between 1957 and 1965, a new pilgrimage church to the Holy Cross, which includes the Romanesque choir ruins, was built according to plans by the Aachen architect Rudolf Steinbach . The Romanesque choir was included in the new building as a side chapel east of the new altar in the basement of the church tower. The curved shape of the new building forms a sheltered forecourt, which the Marienkapelle takes into "its care".
