The Church of the Holy Cross in Bettenhausen , a district of the Rhönblick community in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district , dates from the early 17th century. It belongs to the parish Bettenhausen-Helmershausen in the parish of Meiningen of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

History and appearance

The former fortified church in Bettenhausen probably originated in a waiting tower, the substructure of which was incorporated into the church tower. The previous church dates from the Romanesque period around 1200. Until 1635, the cemetery was located between the church and the defensive walls against which the gaden were leaned. The high top of the church tower with the four small corner turrets was built in 1567.

Before the beginning of the Thirty Years' War , the new building of the current nave began, the laying of the foundation stone in 1617 (inscription above the main portal.) The portals, which are decorated with various decorations, have Renaissance ornaments . The high, ogival windows of the church are decorated with post-Gothic gauges and bars. The present church was consecrated in 1619.

Furnishing

Inside there are two three-sided galleries , the middle church space is spanned by a barrel vault. The baroque interior design of the church dates from the 2nd half of the 17th century. The painters Johann Jacob Prazzo and Johann Jacob Gehres from Meiningen provided the church with magnificent paintings in 1766: the columns were marbled blue, the color blue characterizes the entire interior. The fields of the gallery parapet bear Bible verses and the following biblical scenes are depicted on the barrel vault: announcement of the birth; Baptism of Jesus; Transfiguration of Jesus; Resurrection; Appearance of the risen Christ to the disciples; Christ enthroned beside the Father.

Pulpit and altar

The pulpit altar from 1775 forms an ensemble with the organ above. The union of the pulpit and altar emphasizes the importance of the sermon for Lutheran worship. A pulpit clock on the left on the rear wall of the pulpit served the preacher as a guide. The figures at the pulpit represent the four evangelists with Jesus Christ in the middle. God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are enthroned above them in the form of a dove. The altar is flanked by the life-size figures of Moses and John the Baptist .
