history

It is believed that there was an old Germanic sacrificial site at the site of today's Holy Cross Chapel ; Christian missionaries put up a cross here as a sign of their faith. It is not certain whether St. Kilian preached here , again popularly . Up until the 1960s, a pilgrimage from Westheim to the Holy Cross Chapel was held on the Sunday after Kiliani .

In 1578 a small wooden chapel was built here, which had to be expanded in 1669 due to the increasing number of pilgrims, financed by the pilgrims' sacrificial pennies.

After an increase in income from the pilgrims' sacrificial pennies, today's Holy Cross Chapel was built from 1730 to 1733 . The consecration and the benediction took place on October 3, 1744 by the Würzburg auxiliary bishop, Dr. Johannes Bernardus Mayer, Titular Bishop of Chrysopolis. At the same time, the main altar was dedicated to the Holy Cross , the left side altar to St. John Nepomuk and the right side altar to St. Barbara . Langendorf was responsible for the chapel .

The first bells were a bell that was cast in 1732 and an older bell (possibly from the 15th century), which probably came here from the first parish church in Machtilshausen.

In 1742, the Würzburg auxiliary bishop granted a complete indulgence for the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross on September 14th and sent a cross particle .

In 1741, Martin Weber from Weißbach / Rhön received the permission requested a year earlier to set up a hermitage at the Holy Cross Chapel , but had to give it up 1.5 years later because of bad performance.

In 1840 a cemetery was built around the chapel; previously it was located at the Machtilshausen St. Jakobus Church .

When the St. Jakobus Church was rebuilt in 1910 , the Holy Cross Chapel lost its importance. Later there was a change in awareness in this regard, so that the chapel was extensively renovated from 1978 to 1981.

Today's bells were donated in 1953 and delivered by Karl Czudnochowsky in Erding . They weigh 68 and 34 kg and sound in g '' and b ''.

After four burglaries, the door had to be locked and an alarm system installed after being connected to the power supply.
