Church of the Holy Cross

The Church of the Holy Cross in the village of Pakens in Wangerland is the church of the Evangelical Lutheran parish Pakens- Hooksiel . The church, which was built in Romanesque style at the beginning of the late Middle Ages , stands on the raised western end of a former sea dike . It is one of thirteen stations on the Wangerland pilgrimage route .

Building description

The Church of the Holy Cross, which is surrounded by a cemetery, is a rectangular one-room church with a semicircular apse facing east . The length of the church is 22, its width 7, the radius of the apse 2.25 meters. The walls of the church are about one and a half meters thick. The space between the outer granite and the inner plastered brick wall was filled with rubble and cuttings. To the south of the nave is the free-standing bell tower, a so-called parallel wall tower with four bells. The north and south walls of the Pakens Church and the lower sections of its east and west walls consist of granite blocks that were built with horizontal joints. The upper east wall consists of bricks in the format of a monastery , which were walled up in the gable area in a herringbone pattern. The west wall is also made of bricks that were walled up in an irregular bond. Various forms of jewelry can be found in the gable area. The so-called German band forms the upper end of the two granite walls . The masonry is held together by numerous anchors .

The entrance portal is on the west side. Three round arched window openings with sloping soffits are embedded in the upper parts of the north and south walls. Three more - albeit considerably smaller - arched windows can be found in the apse. Above the middle window there is a sandstone relief showing Christ crucified , his mother Mary and the apostle John .

At its eastern end, the church roof has a weather vane mounted on a sphere .

The way into the church leads through an anteroom, which is located under the organ gallery and is separated from the actual nave by a glazed wooden wall with a central door. From here a staircase leads to the organ gallery on the left; on the right is the small sacristy . The pews, box stalls from the 1640s with a baluster railing in the upper part, are to the right and left of the only aisle that connects the entrance area with the choir .

In 1679 the organ was given a color version. Johann Friedrich Constabel carried out a repair in 1756. In 1897 the Oldenburg organ builder Schmid III rebuilt and expanded it with a pedal mechanism . New mechanical cone chests and new box bellows were installed. In the period between 1937 and 1960, Alfred Führer (Wilhelmshaven) rebuilt the instrument several times. In 1937 a new pneumatic cone store, a magazine bellows and some new voices were built. In 1951, 1957 and 1960, Alfred Führer built a new mechanical slider-chest organ while retaining the old register. A very old register Oktav 2 ′ was added from the magazine holdings, which was initially in the background. In 1999, Bartelt Immer (Norden) finally cleaned and re-intonated the old registers and combined old voices in the main work.
