The St. Johannes Church is a Protestant church in the village of Waddewarden in the municipality of Wangerland . The granite church on a terp from the 13th century is a stop on the Wangerland pilgrimage route. The frescos , the font from the 13th century, the winged altar from 1661 and a pulpit from 1649 are particularly worth seeing .

Building history

The St. John's Church had several wooden predecessor churches. The current building was erected in 1246 on a terp. The apse still has a typically Romanesque semicircular floor plan, but the semicircular dome with which it ends at the top is already pointed . Originally the entire interior was vaulted, but a decorated beamed ceiling has now been added.

The west gable was clad in brick at the end of the 19th century. A long walled-up portal on the south side was later reopened. Typically Frisian, although by no means found in all Frisian churches, is the non-spire-shaped bell tower, which is separate from the actual church building.

organ

Organ of St. John's Church

The organ has a playable Rückpositiv. It was built by Joachim Kayser in a workshop in Jever in 1697 . A maintenance contract was concluded with Johann Gerd Schmid in 1803. In 1870 a pedal mechanism was added, but in 1933 the old composition was restored by Alfred Führer from Wilhelmshaven. The most recent restoration took place in 1966.

Wall painting

The wall painting in the apse is late Gothic and shows Mary and John under the triumphant Christ. Further wall paintings were uncovered during a renovation phase.
