St. Marien is the Catholic church in Schillig , municipality of Wangerland , in the Lower Saxony district of Friesland . The modern church, consecrated on February 4, 2012 by Bishops Felix Genn and Heinrich Timmerevers , belongs to the parish of St. Benedikt , Jever .

history

Since the Reformation was introduced in the Jever rulership in the 16th century, all churches in the Wangerland have been Protestant . In 1824 a Catholic church was built again in Jever. A significant number of Catholics came to Schillig only after the Second World War , when many displaced persons found accommodation in the former naval barracks. In the following years tourism became more and more important. The campsite on the dike, founded in 1954, developed into the largest campsite on the North Sea coast with 1,500 parking spaces in the 1970s.

The first St. Mary's Church was built in 1967 in the immediate vicinity of the campsite by the Cloppenburg architect Gerd Rohling for the small Catholic local community, but above all for the holidaymakers . However, the building materials did not withstand the harsh climatic conditions; In 2008 a need of 1.6 million euros was determined for building maintenance alone. At the diocese level, the decision was made to start an inviting new building at the exposed and much-visited location. The foundation stone was laid after the old church was demolished in autumn 2010. The construction costs are put at 4.7 million euros, a large part of it for the complex foundation in the soft and damp subsoil. The Bonifatiuswerk and numerous individual donors contributed to the financing .

architecture

The new Marienkirche made of dark brick was designed by the Cologne architects Ulrich and Ilse Maria Königs . The floor plan has the shape of a Latin cross , which is not circumscribed at right angles, but rounded. As a result, the wall surfaces are rhythmically shaped like waves. The wave motif recurs in the roof structure, which is reminiscent of rolling and surging ocean waves. The roof provides a view of the North Sea sky through large glass surfaces.

The bright interior is characterized by the contrast between the white, curved walls and the dark stone floor with traces of fossil marine animals. The sand-colored benches are arranged in a semicircle on the altar. The triangular chapel attached to the main room, with the image of the Virgin at the top, invites you to individual prayer.

Furnishing

The tabernacle of the previous church from 1967 and designed by the goldsmith's studio Schwerdt + Förster was taken over again and found its place in a wall niche near the altar.

The organ comes from the demolished St. Ludgerus Church in Waltrop . The instrument was built by the organ builder Friedrich Fleiter (Münster). It has 21 registers on two manual works and a pedal and is in the French-Romantic sound tradition.
