St. Cosmas and Damian Church

The Evangelical Lutheran St. Cosmas and Damian Church in Wiarden is a church building in the district of Wiarden in the municipality of Wangerland in the district of Friesland in Lower Saxony . The parish Wiarden belongs to the parish of Friesland- Wilhelmshaven the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oldenburg .

Building history

The church of St. Cosmas and Damian , built at the beginning of the 13th century , is a typical Romanesque granite block building on a high warf . A church is said to have existed here as early as 1164.

Furnishing

Murals

The choir contains late Gothic wall paintings depicting the apostles Peter , James and John as well as the patron saints of this church, St. Cosmas and Damian.

Altar of the St. Cosmas and Damian Church

The altar was built in 1749 using parts of an older altar and restored in this version in 2004, with parts of the original altar from the 13th century being discovered behind the nailed-up rear wall.
The crucifixion group integrated into the altar and the twelve apostles are carved from oak and date from the first half of the 15th century .

pulpit

The pulpit , which rests on a statue of Moses, dates from 1634 and is the work of Münstermann's student Ommo Dirks. The visible sides of the pulpit basket show the evangelists Matthew , Mark , Luke and John .

Baptismal font

The old baptismal font of the church from the 13th century was given to the Landesmuseum Oldenburg in 1861 . Today a late baroque baptismal font made of wood is used.

Organ of the St. Cosmas and Damian Church

The organ of the Wiarder Church was built in 1808 by organ builder Johann Gerhard Schmid , Leer , and has since been rebuilt several times, most recently in 1963 by organ builder Alfred Führer , Wilhelmshaven .

Bell tower

The free-standing bell tower to the northeast of the church dates from the 15th century. Three strong parallel brick walls (" parallel wall type ") have two bells in between .
