Axel Bürgener

Axel Bürgener (born June 9, 1944 in Korbach ) is a former lieutenant general in the army of the German armed forces and was most recently in command of the army command from 2002 to 2005 .

Life

Military career

After graduating from high school, Bürgener joined the German Armed Forces in 1964 and trained as an officer . From 1971 to 1975 he was battery chief of a self-propelled howitzer battery of the then Panzerartilleriebataillon 55 in Homberg . He then completed general staff training in Hamburg from 1975 to 1977 at the command academy of the Bundeswehr . Bürgener was then transferred to the staff of the 3rd Panzer Division ( Buxtehude ) and served there as General Staff Officer for Operations Planning (G3 Op). From then until 1979 he was head of the logistics department (G4) of Panzergrenadierbrigade 7 in Hamburg.

In 1979 Bürgener was transferred to the Federal Ministry of Defense and served there until 1983 as personal advisor to the parliamentary state secretaries Andreas von Bülow and Willfried Penner . In Lahnstein he was the commander of the armored artillery battalion 155 from 1983 to 1984. Subsequently, until 1991 he was an advisor and head of department for operations planning, strategy, military policy and arms control in the army command staff . From 1991 to 1993 Colonel Bürgener led the 15 Panzer Brigade in Koblenz until it was dissolved. He then graduated from the Federal Academy for Security Policy in Bonn and then became head of the division for the organization of the armed forces.

From January 1, 1995 to 1999, Brigadier General Bürgener was the Chief of Staff of the Army Command in Koblenz under the commanders Klaus Reinhardt and Rüdiger Drews . From 2000 to September 30, 2001, as major general, he was in command of the Defense Area Command IV / 5th Panzer Division in Mainz . He led WBK IV / 5. PzDiv until dissolution. Then he was the commander of the Army Command until 2005. In 2005 he was retired.

After retirement

After his retirement, Bürgener took on a teaching position for political science at the University of Koblenz-Landau .
