Heinz-Georg Lemm

Heinz-Georg Lemm (born June 1, 1919 in Schwerin ; † November 17, 1994 in Ruppichteroth ) was a German officer in the Wehrmacht and in the Bundeswehr, most recently with the rank of lieutenant general.

Career

Lemm was born as the son of an administrative lawyer in the capital of the Free State of Mecklenburg-Schwerin . After he had graduated from a humanistic grammar school in 1936 , he joined the Infantry Regiment 27 of the 12th Infantry Division of the Wehrmacht stationed in Schwerin as a flagjunker . In 1937 he was assigned to the MG, anti-tank and infantry gun company. Later he was group leader. In 1937/38 he attended the Munich War School , where he took the officer examination. Then he was at the Infantry School Döberitz . In 1938/39 he was a platoon leader and recruiting officer. In 1939 he completed the course at the Dessau-Roßlau Pioneer School. During the Second World War he took part in the Polish , Western and Russian campaigns; he became one of the youngest battalion and regimental commanders and one of the most highly decorated soldiers in the army of the Wehrmacht: in 1939/40 he became a cavalry leader. In 1940/41 he became a battalion adjutant, after the company commander course in the French mission 1941/42, company commander, 1942 battalion commander and battalion commander, 1943 regimental commander and 1944 battalion commander. In 1944 he was the leader of a combat group in the central section, and later he was refreshed in West Prussia and deployed to the 27th Fusilier Regiment in the Aachen area ( Battle of Aachen ). During this time he was also wounded and sent to a hospital. In 1944/45 he was regimental commander ( Ardennes offensive ) until he was taken prisoner by the Soviets in February 1945 . In November 1949 he returned from captivity. From 1950 to 1958, he held several positions at Volkswagen in Hamburg and Wolfsburg, from salesman to assistant manager and district sales manager .

In 1958 he joined the army of the Bundeswehr as a colonel . In 1958/59 he was commander of the armored infantry training battalion and teaching group commander at the infantry school in Hammelburg. From 1959 to 1962 he was Head of the Personnel Department at the Federal Ministry of Defense in Bonn. In 1962 he took part in the 1st Brigade Leader Course at the Armored Troop School in Munster and the Bundeswehr Leadership Academy in Hamburg. From 1962 to 1965 he was in command of the 7th Panzer Grenadier Brigade in Hamburg and from 1965 to 1969 of the Army Officer School III in Munich. In 1969/70 he was used under Major General Hans-Joachim von Hopffgarten as Deputy Commander of the 5th Panzer Division in Diez. From 1970 to 1974 he was the commander there. In 1974 he became head of the Army Office in Cologne. In 1979 he retired. After the end of his term of service he became honorary president of the order community of knight cross bearers . Until 1985 he was President of the Ring of German Soldiers' Associations and thereafter its Honorary President until 1988.

Lemm was the father of two children. In 1992, at the age of 73, he married for the second time. He died at the age of 75.
