Joachim Kayser

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joachim Kayser († 1720 in Jever ) was an organ builder who lived in Jever from 1674 until his death and built numerous organs in East Friesland , the Oldenburger Land and the Jeverland . Only the important instrument in the St. Sixtus and Sinicius Church in Hohenkirchen (1694) is essentially preserved .

Life

Kayser's year of birth and origin are unknown. It has not yet been clarified whether there are family ties to two organ builders with the same family name from Celle . Similar to Valentin Ulrich Grotian , Kayser also came into conflict with Arp Schnitger , who held an almost monopoly position in the coastal area between Hamburg and Groningen and tried to expand his organ building privileges, which he held in the counties of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst from 1699 . Years of legal dispute dragged on until 1692, when the parish in Wittmund had signed a contract with Kayser on 23 July 1684 for a new organ, but then preferred Schnitger, who delivered a new organ just a few weeks later. Otherwise, Kayser was able to assert himself alongside Schnitger in the organ landscape of East Friesland and through his privilege for the Jeverland from July 21, 1699 by Duke Karl Wilhelm .

Kayser's activity as an organ builder began with an order at the Lambertikirche in Aurich , where he rebuilt the organ in 1674 and in 1675 added a Rückpositiv on a second manual . In Funnix , Kayser created a small positive in 1678 , which was later replaced by a new work by Johann Friedrich Constabel and Hinrich Just Müller (1760–1762). It is possible that Kayser built a new organ in Bingum (1683). In Waddewarden (1679), Blexen (1684–85), Schortens (1686), Westerstede (1685–87) and Eilsum (1709–1710) only the splendid prospectuses can be admired of his new buildings . In Schortens, Kayser had used material from the previous organ (1640), which was destroyed in a tower collapse in 1676. The instrument in Westerstede had 22 registers and an independent pedal. Jürgen Ahrend reconstructed the entire inventory of pipes in the interior at the highest level, so that the original sound splendor can be guessed again. In Hohenkirchen in 1694 Kayser built a two-manual instrument with an attached pedal, which he expanded in 1699 with an independent pedal mechanism. While the original stock of this valuable instrument has been preserved, the aliquot and tongue registers as well as the entire chest were later replaced. In 1974, the Alfred Führer Company restored the original condition from 1699. Since the old prospect pipes were only shut down in the 19th century, but fortunately not removed, a modified mean-tone temperature could be determined from the incisions . Although everything comes from a single source, the external structure is curious due to the addition of the pedal towers and the attachment on the central tower of the main work. In July 2007, vandalism caused considerable property damage when an unknown person smashed several organ pipes. Only a few pipes are evidence of Kayser's reconstruction of the organ in Larrelt (1709–11), while nothing has been preserved of the new buildings in Ditzum (1703–1704), Fedderwarden (1702–04) and Heppens (1703). He built a single organ in the province of Groningen in Farmsum . Kayser's repairs to u. a. the organs Rysum (1680–1681), Reepsholt (1681), Berne (1690), Jade (1699), Riepe (1706), in the Lambertikirche in Aurich (1707–1710), Petkum (1707), Oldersum (1708–1709) ), Engerhafe (1715), Greetsiel (1716), Eilsum (1717–1718).

Works

The size of the instruments is indicated in the fifth column by the number of manuals and the number of sounding registers in the sixth column. A capital “P” stands for an independent pedal, a lowercase “p” for an attached pedal. Italics indicate that the organ in question is no longer available or that only the prospectus has been preserved.
