Jürgen Ahrend in 2019

Jürgen Ahrend Orgelbau is an organ building company in Leer-Loga , East Frisia . She achieved world fame through the restoration of baroque organs, including the Arp Schnitger organs of the Jacobikirche Hamburg , the Martinikerk in Groningen (NL) and the Ludgerikirche in the north as well as the Ebert organ of the Hofkirche Innsbruck . It was founded by Jürgen Ahrend (born April 28, 1930 in Treuenhagen near Göttingen ). His son Hendrik Ahrend has been running the company since 2005.

history

Jürgen Ahrend was born in 1930 as the son of Heinrich Ahrend, who had studied music, was a singer and choir director and played various keyboard and string instruments. In his first marriage Jürgen Ahrend was born with Margarete. Bartels, who married the Dutch organist Klaas Bolt on January 2, 1990 . Of the five children in total, Sievert and Heiko Ahrend are musicians, composers and music producers.

Jürgen Ahrend learned his trade from 1945 with Paul Ott in Göttingen and at the age of 24 founded the company Ahrend & Brunzema (1954–1971) in Leer-Loga together with Gerhard Brunzema (1927–1992) . The first work of this cooperative was the restoration of the organ of the reformed church in Larrelt . The restoration of the historical organs in Westerhusen , Uttum and Rysum in the Krummhörn , which were again tuned to a medium tone , caused a worldwide sensation , which initiated a return to traditional craftsmanship techniques and musical aesthetic sound ideals. Due to the location of the workshop in the middle of the organ landscape of East Friesland with its numerous original instruments, one had enough opportunity to deal with the essence of these organs. Ahrend and Brunzema received the Lower Saxony State Prize for Crafts in 1962. Up to 1971 the catalog of the jointly produced or restored works comprised 74 instruments. That year Brunzema left the company to settle in Canada, where he started his own business in 1980 and died in 1992.

Between 1972 and 2004, Jürgen Ahrend and his employees built, reconstructed or restored 90 more plants. Jürgen Ahrend earned his reputation as one of the leading organ builders and restorers due to his consistent restoration practice and his high level of intonation . On May 21, 1986 Jürgen Ahrend received the Lower Saxony State Prize for Culture and on May 5, 2007 the Buxtehude Prize of the city of Lübeck . He was awarded an honorary doctorate (Dr. iur. Hc) on April 19, 2000 by Monash University, Victoria (Australia).

Hendrik Ahrend (2020)

Hendrik Ahrend (born August 11, 1963) worked in his father's company after graduating in 1983. After the organ building apprenticeship with Johannes Rohlf in Neubulach (1984-1987) and the civil service (1987/88) he came back to his father's company (1988/89 and 1996-2000), but interrupted his work by studying American studies and Sports Science (1989-1995). Since 1998 he has been entrusted with increasing amounts of work. In 1998 he took over the intonation of the labial pipes of the organ in Dornum and, in 2002, was responsible for the planning of the organ for the Luther Church in Leer . Hendrik Ahrend completed the master course at the music school for organ building in Ludwigsburg in 2000 and then studied 14 months with his teacher Johannes Rohlf. In 2004 he received the International Arp Schnitger Prize for his services. After 50 years of successful activity, Jürgen Ahrends has been managed by his son since February 2005. Hendrik Ahrend continues the tradition of his father, but also breaks new ground by re-using the historical sand casting process to make pipes. He uses hot glue to glue on leather and to seal wood in the winch or in the wind chests in order to prevent lead corrosion of the pipes. It is created by leaking acetic acid from oak or by using acetate glue . Hendrik Ahrend is a project partner in the research project “Development of Measures to Reduce Lead Corrosion on Organ Pipes from the 17th and 18th Centuries”, which is funded from 2016 to 2018 by the German Federal Environmental Foundation and the Hanover Monastery Chamber. For over 30 years he has been playing semi-professional bluegrass with his brother Heiko, but in recent years has concentrated entirely on organ building.

Works (selection)

The size of the instruments is indicated by the number of manuals (Roman numerals) and the number of sounding registers (Arabic numerals). A separate pedal is marked with a capital "P", an attached pedal with a small "p". R = restoration, Rk = reconstruction and NB = new building. The links in the last column refer to further information and the dispositions .
