St. Cosmae et Damiani

The Church of St. Cosmae et Damiani (actually, correctly Ss. Cosmae et Damiani, as it has two namesake) is one of the two main Evangelical Lutheran churches in the Hanseatic city of Stade . Mostly it is only called Cosmaekirche or St. Cosmae in Stade.

history

St. Cosmae was built in the second half of the 13th century in the brick Gothic style and named after Saints Cosmas and Damian .

The current building is the result of various extensions and alterations, especially in the 17th century. A landmark of the city that can be seen from afar is the octagonal tower with its baroque dome . Without a weather vane, it is 62.45 m high.

Inside, the richly figured baroque altar by Christian Precht (1674–77) is impressive. The medieval winged altar in the Gertruden chapel is also worth seeing .

organ

The large organ , built between 1668 and 1673, is the work of Berendt Hus and his nephew Arp Schnitger . The latter exchanged four registers of his master for new ones in 1688 . Changes were made in 1727/28 by Otto Diedrich Richborn . Further alterations with interventions in the original substance took place from 1781 onwards. Between 1972 and 1975 the organ was extensively reconstructed with the help of the expert committee of the Hanover regional church.
