Karl Wilhelm von Anhalt-Zerbst (born October 16, 1652 in Zerbst ; † November 3, 1718 ibid) from the Ascanian dynasty was the ruling Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst from 1667 until his death .

Life

Karl Wilhelm was the third son of Prince Johann von Anhalt-Zerbst (1621–1667) from his marriage to Sophie Auguste (1630–1680), daughter of Duke Friedrich III. from Holstein-Gottorp . When his father died, still a minor, his mother ruled from 1667 to 1674 together with Landgrave Ludwig VI. von Hessen-Darmstadt and Prince Johann Georg II. von Anhalt-Dessau as guardian.

Karl Wilhelm was the founder of Zerbst Castle (1681) and the Lutheran Church of St. Trinity in Zerbst, both of which were inaugurated in 1696. The construction of the Trinity Church ended a year-long dispute with the Reformed congregation in Zerbst, to which the Nicolaikirche was left. Karl Wilhelm also had schools built in Coswig and Zerbst in 1691 and 1701 respectively.

The prince resided in Jever for a long time , which had fallen to the Zerbst family in 1667 through Karl Wilhelm's grandmother. For the rule of Jever he got into conflict with the Kingdom of Denmark.

Under the company name Der Schattichte he was accepted as a member of the literary fruitful society .
