Sophia (also Sophie ) von Sachsen-Weißenfels (born June 23, 1654 in Halle ; † March 31, 1724 in Zerbst ) was a born princess of Sachsen-Weißenfels and -Querfurt from the house of the Albertine Wettins and by marriage Princess of Anhalt- Zerbst .

family

Sophia was the third daughter of Duke August von Sachsen-Weißenfels and his wife Anna Maria von Mecklenburg-Schwerin , daughter of Duke Adolf Friedrich I of Mecklenburg-Schwerin .

She is named after her paternal great-grandmother, the Saxon Electress Sophie von Brandenburg .

Death and burial

Sophia died at the age of 69 in her apartments at Zerbst Castle and was buried on June 7, 1724 in the royal crypt of the court church at St. Bartholomäi . It was not until 1899 that Duke Friedrich I von Anhalt arranged for it to be implemented in the hereditary burial of the Prince of Zerbst in the castle church of Schloss Zerbst. After the castle was destroyed in 1945, the remains of the damaged coffins were returned to the St. Bartholomäikirche.

Sophiengroden, which was diked in 1698, and the village of Sophiensiel in the Wangerland are named after Sophie .

Marriage and offspring

Her only marriage was on June 18, 1676 in Halle with Karl Wilhelm, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst , the son of Johann VI, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst from his marriage to Sophie Auguste of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf .

As a special feature it should be noted that Karl Wilhelm and Sophia had a common bedroom in the new baroque palace, contrary to the custom at almost all royal courts in Europe.
