Johann August of Anhalt-Zerbst (born July 29 . Jul / 8. August  1677 greg. In Zerbst , † 7. November 1742 ibid) was from 1718 until his death in 1742 reigning prince of Anhalt-Zerbst .

Life

Johann August was the eldest son of Prince Karl Wilhelm von Anhalt-Zerbst (1652-1718) and his wife Sophia (1654-1724), daughter of Duke August von Sachsen-Weißenfels . He was named after his two grandfathers.

He was trained very extensively and made his cavalier tour to the Netherlands, France and England. From 1699 Johann August was included in the government of the country through his father. On the occasion of his marriage to Friederike (1675–1709), daughter of Duke Friedrich I of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg , whom he married on May 25, 1702 in Zerbst, he received his own court. From 1704 he built a pleasure palace in Badetz, which was named Friederikenberg in honor of his wife . His wife, considered intelligent and beautiful, died in 1709. It was not until 1715 that he remarried Hedwig Friederike von Württemberg-Weiltingen (1691–1752).

After the death of his father in 1718, he took over the government in Anhalt-Zerbst. Johann August was considered a benevolent and prudent regent. In the peace years of his government, the country and especially the royal seat of Zerbst developed extraordinarily. In 1722 he appointed Johann Friedrich Fasch as court conductor to Zerbst.

His two marriages had remained childless, and with the death of the prince, the main line of Anhalt-Zerbst established by prince Rudolf became extinct . The Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornberg line took over the title. His successors as Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst were Johann Ludwig II and his brother Christian August .
