Christian August von Anhalt-Zerbst

Christian August, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst (born November 29, 1690 in Dornburg ; † March 16, 1747 in Zerbst ) was a royal Prussian field marshal , father of Russian Tsarina Katharina II and son of Johann Ludwig I of Anhalt-Zerbst . He came from the house of the Ascanians and ruled as Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst from 1742 .

Life

After Christian August 1708 had been captain of the Guard Regiment for about half a year , he received a company in the Anhalt-Zerbst Regiment on foot on February 11, 1709 (1806: No. 8), which had this name since 1688 and its tradition in In the 19th century the Grenadier Regiment King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. (Left Pomeranian) No. 2 continued. It was stationed in Szczecin . In 1711 he received the Order De la Générosité , later renamed Pour le Mérite , and was promoted from captain to lieutenant colonel on March 1, 1713 . After the prince had taken part in the campaigns of the Spanish War of Succession and in the Netherlands, he became head of the Anhalt-Zerbst on foot regiment in 1714, was promoted to colonel on January 4, 1716, and majored general on August 14, 1721 .

On January 22, 1729 he became the commandant of Stettin, after he had been appointed Knight of the Black Eagle Order in Stettin on May 24, 1725 . Christian August was promoted to lieutenant general on May 28, 1732 and to general of the infantry on April 8, 1741 . On June 5th of the same year he was appointed governor of Szczecin. On May 16, 1742, Frederick II awarded him the highest military dignity, the rank of field marshal .

From November 1742, after the death of Johann August (Anhalt-Zerbst) , he and his brother Johann Ludwig II became the ruling princes of Anhalt-Zerbst . So he and his family moved to Zerbst Castle .

Marriage and offspring

On November 8, 1727, he married 15-year-old Johanna Elisabeth von Holstein-Gottorf (1712–1760), daughter of Christian August von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf, in Vechelde near Braunschweig .
