Johann Ludwig I of Anhalt-Zerbst (born May 4, 1656 in Zerbst ; † November 1, 1704 in Dornburg ) from the House of Ascanians was a Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst .

Life

Johann Ludwig was a younger son of Prince Johann von Anhalt-Zerbst (1621–1667) from his marriage to Sophie Auguste (1630–1680), daughter of Duke Friedrich III. from Holstein-Gottorp . Since his youth, Johann Ludwig suffered from a defect in his left thigh, which is why he could not begin his Grand Tour until 1677.

In 1684 he entered the imperial service as a captain, took part in the campaign in Hungary and later retired to Dornburg Castle. Johann Ludwig is the founder of the Dornburg line, which inherited the main Anhalt-Zerbst line in 1742.

Under the company name The Sprinkled , he was accepted as a member of the Literary Fruitful Society .

Marriage and offspring

Johann Ludwig married Christine Eleonore von Zeutsch (1666–1699) in Halle (Saale) on July 23, 1687 . After receiving court education in Halle from 1672, she had lived at the court of the Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst since 1684. She was a daughter of Georg Vollrath von Zeutsch (1624–1689) on Hedersleben and Christiane von Weißenbach (1645–1680) from the house of Altranstädt . Her father was around 1670–1680 truchess with the administrator of the Magdeburg Archdiocese in Halle, August von Sachsen-Weißenfels († 1680).

The children of this marriage were raised to the rank of imperial prince by Emperor Leopold I in 1689 . By his decree, marriage and children are recognized as befitting and noble:
