St. James Church

The St. Jakobus Church is one of the two churches in the Cleverns-Sandel parish. The community is part of the parish of Friesland - Wilhelmshaven the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oldenburg .
The lower half of the hall church from the 2nd half of the 13th century consists of granite , above it of brick . In the 17th century the church fell into disrepair. During the restoration in 1702, the originally existing east apse was dispensed with. The beginnings of the apse walls remained as retaining walls. In these remains of the wall there are continuous recesses the size of half a brick, so-called hagioscopes . In addition, the nave was lowered and shortened in the west. The narrow west tower dates from 1840. Inside there is a beamed ceiling . Traces of a former bulge can be seen. The upper part of a Romanesque baptismal font made of granite from around 1200 has been preserved. The organ is the work of the Oldenburg organ builder Johann Martin Schmid (1847–1923). It was built in 1891 and has been almost completely preserved. It has a manual , an independent pedal and seven sounding registers .

Jeverland memorial at the Upschloot

The idea of the memorial is emphasized twice a year by services on Ascension Day and on Eternity Sunday.
