Location of Cleverns in Lower Saxony

Cleverns is a district of Jever in the Friesland district in Lower Saxony , about 4 km from the city center. The state road Jever - Cleverns - Rispel ( L 813 ) runs through the village .

Place name

There are several meanings for the place name Cleverns . Some scientists suspect that the place name is composed of the old Frisian word Kleverer . In Old Frisian, the prefix Klever means something like clover or shamrock. Clover leaf was probably associated with luck back then . "Cleverns" could therefore mean happy village or shamrock village .

history

Former Harle Bay (blue) with golden line , extensions after the Second Marcellus Flood in 1362

The area in and around Cleverns shows traces of settlement from the Stone Age. Cleverns is one of the oldest settlements in Jeverland . When a new school building was built in 1938, a larger grave field with around 200 grave sites was found. Among other things, a “Sachsen urn” from the 5th century was found. In addition, graves from pre-Christian times were discovered. As grave goods , there were remains of old jewelry, which probably came from the 9th century .

During the second Marcellus flood of 1362, the water advanced as far as the Geestrands Möns , Sandel and Cleverns. As a result, the Harle Bay , which originally only protruded 10 kilometers into the interior, was expanded considerably. Dike construction measures were carried out to protect against renewed flooding .

The municipality of Cleverns was merged with the municipalities of Sandel, Schortens and Sande to form the large municipality of Oestringen in 1933 . The construction of an airfield in Upjever , which went into operation on May 1st, 1936 , led to a division of the municipality into two parts, so that in 1948 Oestringen was almost inevitably dissolved. Together with the former municipality of Sandel, Cleverns now formed the municipality of Cleverns-Sandel , which was incorporated into the city of Jever on July 1, 1972.

In 1990 Cleverns was named “Friesland's most beautiful village” in the group of localities with a predominantly agricultural and village character. The place is still dominated by agriculture, there are other jobs in the largest nursery in the district of Friesland as well as in an electrical installation company and electrical shop . Most clever employees are so-called out- commuters .

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Holy Cross and St. Peter is located - surrounded by a cemetery - on a Wurt . It was built at the end of the 12th century / beginning of the 13th century as a single-nave Romanesque church. Inside there is a Gothic rood screen .

The church altar dates from the 1620s. The altarpiece shows in a remarkable way a scene from the story of the crucifixion of Jesus.

The organ is the work of an unknown organ builder, who built it around 1725 for the church in Logabirum . The predecessor of this organ was possibly a positive from Joachim Kayser's workshop in Jever. When Gerhard Janssen Schmid built a new organ in Logabirum in 1812, he took the old one in payment and sold it to the Cleverns parish. The organ was replaced in 1907 by a new building in which the old case was retained and two side towers were added. Alfred Führer , in whose care the instrument had been since 1936, finally created a new organ in 1972, which was based on the baroque organ of the 18th century.

On the southeast side of the church is the bell tower built around 1500 .

religion

The overwhelming majority of the clever people belong to the Evangelical Lutheran denomination. Catholics and Baptists are taken care of by the respective parishes in Jever.

The formerly independent Evangelical Lutheran parish of Cleverns was merged with the parish of Sandel in 1938 to form the parish of Cleverns-Sandel. The Cleverns-Sandel parish has half a parish office. The current parish priest also holds half a pastor's position in the parish of Jever.

Public facilities

The city of Jever maintains a primary school in Cleverns for the districts of Cleverns-Sandel and Rahrdum as well as a kindergarten for children aged 3 to 6 years.
