Holy Cross Church

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Holy Cross of Hattula ( Finnish Pyhän Ristin kirkko ) is located 13 kilometers north of Hämeenlinna ( Swedish Tavastehus ) in Häme in southern Finland near the point where the roads from Helsinki to Tampere, a good 100 kilometers away, and from Turku to Lahti cross . The Hämeenlinna Castle is nearby.

The "Church of the Holy Cross" dates from the 14th century, belongs to the Holy Cross Churches ( Finnish Pyhän Ristin kirkko ) like the Church of Taivassalo and was a Catholic pilgrimage site before the Reformation. It was built of brick and is therefore the only surviving medieval brick church in Finland besides Turku Cathedral . Like the church in Taivassalo, that of Hattula is significant in terms of art history because of its frescoes from the 16th century. As an exception, the paintings were not painted over after the Reformation, but remained.
