St. Crucis (Abtsbessingen)
The evangelical parish church St. Crucis ( Holy Cross ) is a listed church building in Abtsbessingen in the Kyffhäuserkreis ( Thuringia ).
History and architecture
The originally late Gothic building stands within a circular wall with a gate tower . Due to the complex, earlier use as a fortified church is assumed. The three-sided closing Saalkirche with gable roof was 1703-1705 using previous components, including a late Gothic, profiled Südportal built. The wide four-storey west tower on a square floor plan is in front. Its lower parts date from the 15th century and have a lantern-topped hood. There is an arched curtain window on the south side .
The interior is vaulted with a wooden barrel . There are two-storey galleries on three sides , on whose parapets canvases depict scenes from the Old and New Testament. The scenes were painted by various artists in the 18th century.
Furnishing
- The pulpit altar from the first decade of the 18th century is attributed to Johann Christoph Meil . The pulpit is decorated with figures of the apostles and very three-dimensional flowers.
- The cafeteria is medieval.
- The offering box is from 1598.
- A medieval grave slab with incised drawings was installed as an altar step.
Gatehouse
The gatehouse with a round arched gate and a tower top, the so-called Seierurm, is probably from medieval times. It was rebuilt in 1821.
