The Multimedia Internet KEYing ( MIKEY ) is a key exchange protocol standardized according to RFC -3830 . It is characterized by its independence from the underlying signaling protocol , a large number of variants for key exchange and low latency .

MIKEY is mainly used for real-time multimedia applications in connection with SRTP and generally uses the following three key exchange methods :

  • Pre-shared key (PSK): Procedure in which the key must be agreed with all communication partners before transmission. Difficult to scale with many communication partners.
  • Public key : Asymmetrical encryption method in which messages are encoded and decoded with the help of public and private keys.
  • Diffie-Hellman : This principle differs from the above in that no common key has to be transmitted, but can be calculated by both communication parties. This has the advantage that communication can also be handled via insecure channels. However, the process fails if there are more than two communication partners.
