The Church of the Holy Cross

The parish Heilig Kreuz is a parish and church in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising . It is located in the Dachau-Ost district and is known as a (former) displaced community . Together with St. Peter Dachau it forms the Parish Association of Dachau - Holy Cross and St. Peter.

history

In 1945 the former concentration camp inmate Father Leonhard Roth stayed in the former concentration camp in order to provide pastoral care and missionary work to the SS members imprisoned there . Under his direction, the inmates built a camp church next to the “Jourhaus” of the camp, which was inaugurated in 1946. With the conversion of the site as a residential camp for expellees - mainly from the Sudetenland - Father Roth began to set up a parish. Since the camp church was only released for Germans by the US authorities from 1956, he set up a barrack church under the patronage of the Holy Cross . With the gradual relocation of the camp residents to the newly founded district of Dachau-Ost, the community also moved to a cinema on Sudetenlandstrasse. In 1964, today's church was built according to plans by the architect Friedrich Haindl and the two churches in the camp were demolished.

On April 12, 1964, the church was consecrated by Cardinal Julius Döpfner .

In December 2012 the parish association Dachau - Hl. Kreuz und St. Peter was founded, in which the two neighboring parishes were administratively combined.
