The Chapel of the Holy Cross in Heusenstamm in Hesse was built in 1708 as a field chapel in memory of Count Johann Erwein von Schönborn , who died in 1705 . Today it stands as a cemetery chapel on the southern border of the Heusenstammer cemetery. The chapel is decorated with artistically valuable stucco work.

history

Detail of the stucco decoration in the interior of the chapel.

When Imperial Count Johann Erwein von Schönborn died in 1705, his widow, Imperial Countess Mariana (née Waldbott von Bassenheim ) commissioned the construction of the field chapel to commemorate the Holy Cross. Mariana was married to Eugen Erwein for only one year and was the niece of his first wife Maria Anna, who had died in 1702. The two Italian plasterers Eugenio Castelli and Antonio Genome, who carried out the work in a high artistic quality, were entrusted with the execution of the furnishings . In 1708 the work was finished and the chapel was completed. The crucifixion group adjacent to the chapel, which was built in 1709, is originally related to the commemoration of the dead. It was not until 30 years later, in 1739, that the construction of the Schönborn burial church, St. Cäcilia , began. In the meantime, the field chapel of the Holy Cross served as Schönborn's court chapel.
