The locomotives of the class ВЛ19 (German transcription WL19) of the Soviet Railways (SŽD) are wide-gauge electric locomotives . They were first referred to as the ВЛ114 series (WL114). Part of the series was converted to ВЛ19М (WL19M).

Series ВЛ19 (WL19)

Preparations for the state-owned construction of electric locomotives have been in progress at the Kolomna plant since 1929 . In parallel with the С С series (initially referred to as the С С 11 series), an outwardly similar but lighter locomotive for higher speed and higher power was developed from March 15, 1932. The prototype of this series was completed on November 6, 1932 before the first С С 11 and was designated as ВЛ114-1. It was the first electric locomotive built in the Soviet Union . The series designation "ВЛ114" was derived from "Владимир Ленин" ( Vladimir Lenin ) and the mass of 114 tons. After just a few days, the name was changed to "ВЛ19-01", referring to the axle load of 19 tons.

Like the С С , the ВЛ19-01 was equipped with three-axle bogies and designed for 3 kV direct current. A door in the front was provided as access to the locomotive. The front end accommodated the headlights and sockets, giving the locomotives the appearance of Soviet electric locomotives that was typical up until the 1950s.

While the series С С was immediately built in series, the ВЛ-01 was initially tested. In the summer of 1933 she came to the newly electrified section Chaschuri - Sestaponi , known as the Surami Pass , of the Tbilisi - Poti line of the Transcaucasian Railway in the Georgian SSR .

In 1934 series production of the ВЛ19 series began with ВЛ19-02. No changes were made until the ВЛ19-40, which was delivered in 1935. As part of the re-electrification of the Sagorsk - Alexandrov line , an interface was created in Sagorsk with the already electrified 1.5 kV line from Moscow . Therefore ВЛ19-41 was built as a two-voltage locomotive for 1.5 and 3 kV on a trial basis. During the further construction of the ВЛ19 series, which continued until 1938, another twelve ВЛ19s were built for both power systems in 1936 and 1937, while the remaining ВЛ19s were still only equipped for 3 kV. A total of 121 VL19s in the 3 kV version and 13 VL19s in the two-system version were created. 53 ВЛ19 for 3 kV were converted to dual-system locomotives in 1954.

ВЛ19-01 as a memorial in Chaschuri (2008)

The ВЛ19 were retired from 1969 to 1977. Four ВЛ19 have been preserved as museum or monument locomotives: ВЛ19-01 in Chaschuri ( Georgia ), ВЛ19-35 in Yekaterinburg , ВЛ19-40 in Kandalakscha and ВЛ19-61 in Slatoust .

ВЛ19М series (WL19M)

As part of extensive overhauls, ten ВЛ19s were equipped with the more powerful ВЛ22М series engines in the Novocherkassk electric locomotive factory in 1947 . The top speed was increased to 90 km / h in the course of the conversion. The converted locomotives were given the series designation ВЛ19М and new serial numbers above those of the ВЛ22 and ВЛ22М, which have since been delivered . The following ВЛ19М were created through renovation:

  • ВЛ19М-187 from ВЛ19-137
  • ВЛ19М-189 from ВЛ19-02
  • ВЛ19М-190 from ВЛ19-75
  • ВЛ19М-191 from ВЛ19-25
  • ВЛ19М-192 from the bogies of the unfinished ВЛ19-127 and the locomotive body of the ВЛ19-52
  • ВЛ19М-193 from ВЛ19-139
  • ВЛ19М-194 from ВЛ19-141
  • ВЛ19М-195 from ВЛ19-59
  • ВЛ19М-196 from ВЛ19-07
  • ВЛ19М-197 from ВЛ19-10

The ВЛ19М were retired from 1972 to 1976.
