The locomotives of the series ВЛ22 and ВЛ22М (German transcription WL22 and WL22M) of the Soviet Railways (SŽD) are wide-gauge electric locomotives . Individual ВЛ22М have been converted to ВЛ22И (WL22I).

Series ВЛ22 (WL22)

As the successor to the С С (S S ) series, the Kolomna plant developed a locomotive in the first half of 1938 with unchanged performance but a higher top speed. Following the construction of the ВЛ19 (WL19) series, a prototype was completed in September 1938. Following the series С С , which ended with the С С -21, it was initially given the designation СМ22-22 (SM22-22), with the "22" in the series designation referring to the axle load of 22 tons, which, however, remained unchanged compared to the series С С.

The characteristic structure of the series С С and ВЛ19 with a set-back front, in which the access to the driver's cab is located, and the circuit in front of it was largely retained. The rotating grilles support the lower headlights and the socket strip. The design with two three-axle bogies was also retained, but the design of the bogies was modernized. The engines of the type ДПЭ-340 (DPE-340) were adopted unchanged from the Сс series.

СМ22-22 was redrawn shortly after delivery in ВЛ22-146, which directly followed the numbering of the series ВЛ19. Series production with ВЛ22-147 began in 1938. It ended in 1941 with ВЛ22-183. Most of the ВЛ22 were later converted to ВЛ22М.

Series ВЛ22М (WL22M)

In 1941, ВЛ22-178 was factory-equipped with the newly developed, more powerful engines of the type ДПЭ-400 (DPE-400). It was tested in the following years on the Transcaucasian Railway . After the Second World War , another test vehicle with engines of the modified type ДПЭ-400А (DPE-400A) was built in 1946 and designated as ВЛ22М-184. The series production of the ВЛ22М series was carried out by the Novocherkassk electric locomotive factory . In 1947 ВЛ22М-185, -186, -188 and -200 to -202 were built. The number gap was due to the modernization of some ВЛ19 (WL19) to ВЛ19М (WL19M), for which new serial numbers were assigned. The construction of the ВЛ22М series continued until 1958, a total of 1542 ВЛ22М were built. In addition, ВЛ22-146 to 178 were converted to ВЛ22М, whereby the serial numbers were retained.

The ВЛ22М were built with different gear ratios, whereby different top speeds were reached. This differentiated according to use in freight and passenger transport.

As a successor, the Novocherkassk electric locomotive factory built the series ВЛ23 from 1958 , the first prototypes of which had already been made in 1956. As a more powerful, eight-axle variant, the ВЛ8 series was built as early as 1955 .

Series ВЛ22И (WL22I)

Based on experience with the ВЛ8В-001 built in 1966 , the ВЛ22М-1586 was converted into the ВЛ22И-1586 at the Tbilisi electric locomotive factory in 1973 . It also received the equipment for use with 6 kV direct current. In addition, the rotating grilles were replaced by closed metal sheets that also held the headlights. Tests under 6 kV direct current were carried out in 1974 on the Gori - Tskhinvali line . Until 1975, ВЛ22И-578, -1005, -1031 and -1710 were made in the same way. All ВЛ22И were retired in 1980.

commitment

The class ВЛ22 initially served on the Transcaucasian Railway to replace the class ВЛ19. Later it was also used from Perm . The ВЛ22, which had not been converted to ВЛ22М, were retired from 1977 to 1980.

The ВЛ22М series was used almost everywhere in the Soviet direct current network. Retirement began in the 1980s. When the Soviet Union was dissolved in 1991, the remaining ВЛ22М came to the Rossijskije schelesnyje dorogi ( Russia ), the Ukrzalisnyzja ( Ukraine ) and the Sakartwelos Rkinigsa ( Georgia ).

In 2008 only a few ВЛ22М were still in use. At the Ukrzalisnyzja they have been removed from the inventory, in Russia they were still in use at the Rossijskije schelesnyje dorogi in Yekaterinburg and Perm until about 2002 and at the apatite works in Apatity until 2005 . In 2008, the deployment in Russia was limited to industrial companies in the Chelyabinsk Oblast . As the only state railway, the Sakartwelos Rkinigsa used a few ВЛ22М in the vicinity of Kutaisi in 2015 , most recently only for passenger traffic. In some cases, the series designation on the locomotives was changed to "E22M" or "ე 22 M" (with Georgian E).
