The locomotives of the series ВЛ23 (German transcription WL23) of the Soviet Railways (SŽD) are wide-gauge electric locomotives . From some ВЛ23 multiple units were formed under the designations 2ВЛ23 and 3ВЛ23 .

Series ВЛ23 (WL23)

As early as 1952, the Novocherkassk electric locomotive factory developed the eight-axle locomotives of the ВЛ8 series (at that time still known as Н8 / N8) and built them from 1955. On the basis of this design, a six-axle, less powerful variant was designed as a successor to the ВЛ22М (WL22M) series from 1954 . At the beginning of 1956 two prototypes as ВЛ23-001 and -002 were completed. ВЛ23-001 was in the summer of 1956 at the experimental ring section of the All-Russian Research Institute of Rail Transport in shcherbinka tested ВЛ23-002 on the track Kropatschowo - Zlatoust - Chelyabinsk .

ВЛ23-003 and -004 were completed in January 1958; unlike the first two ВЛ23, they did not have a recuperation brake . After the construction of the ВЛ22М series was discontinued in 1958, series production of the ВЛ23 began, still without a recuperation brake. Also in 1958, two locomotives with recuperation brakes were built and classified as ВЛ23-500 and -501. However, there was no series production of this variant. The construction of the ВЛ23 ended in 1961 with ВЛ23-487, a total of 489 ВЛ23 were built.

The series ВЛ23 had no direct successor, the construction of six-axle freight locomotives for direct current was discontinued in 1961, while the construction of such locomotives for alternating current was continued with the series ВЛ60 and its substructures.

Series ВЛ23И (WL23I)

ВЛ23-006 was equipped with thyristors in 1972 and renamed ВЛ23И-006. The conversion did not prove itself, further ВЛ23 were not converted. ВЛ23И-006 was used in shunting and retired in 1978.

Series 3ВЛ23 (3WL23)

In 1987 eleven triple units were assembled from 33 VL23s. They received the series designation 3ВЛ23 and were renumbered (3ВЛ23-001 to -011). No further changes were made.

Series 2ВЛ23 (2WL23)

From 1987 to 1990, 92 double units were made up of 184 VL23s. They were given the series designation 2ВЛ23 and were renumbered (2ВЛ23-011 to -101). No further changes were made.

commitment

The use of the ВЛ23 series was largely limited to western and central Russia and southern Ukraine, but it also reached Azerbaijan. The operations took place in both freight and passenger traffic. When the Soviet Union was dissolved in 1991, the ВЛ23 came to the Rossijskije schelesnyje dorogi ( Russia ) and the Azərbaycan Dövlət Dəmir Yolu ( Azerbaijan ).

The majority of the decommissioning took place in the 1990s. In 2008 only a few VL23s were still in use. The Rossijskije schelesnyje dorogi still used individual VL23s for provision traffic, another was in use in Bakal on a works railway. The Azərbaycan Dövlət Dəmir Yolu used two ВЛ23s in 2008.
