In 2007, Mechel won the bid for the Jakutugol and Elgaugol coal companies at an auction. According to experts, the coal reserves in the region could amount to 30–40 billion t.

Elgaugol

The open pit is located about 800 km south of Yakutsk and mines Russia's largest hard coal deposit. The Elga deposit consists of steam and coking coal ; stocks amount to 2.1 billion tons. This makes it one of the largest hard coal deposits in the world. Mining began in August 2011, and by the end of the year one million tons of coal should have been mined. The planned annual production after reaching full production is 27 million tons.

In order to tap the coal, a 315 km long branch line and a road are being built from the Baikal-Amur-Magistrale (BAM). At the same time, the largest bulk cargo port in the Far East is being built in Wanino .

From 2012, the coal trains from Elga to the port, 2000 km away, should run. Together with the production from the Neryungrinsky open-cast mine, 15 million tonnes should be handled there annually, and from 2015 25 million tonnes. Up to 220 locomotives and 12,000 wagons will be used to transport this amount of coal to the Pacific. The coal then leaves Russia on 150,000 t freighters for Japan , South Korea and Taiwan .

2010–2030 Mechel supplies the Russian railways with 400,000 t of rails annually.
