Holy Cross Church (Bielefeld)
The Holy Cross Church is a Catholic parish church in Bielefeld . It is located in the northeast of the city in the Brake district in the Heepen district . The church and parish belong to the Bielefeld-Lippe deanery in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .
Building history
After the dissolution of the Franciscan monastery Bielefeld in 1829 there was only the 600-member parish of Schildesche. Only after the Second World War did the influx of people displaced from the East lead to a sharp rise in the number of Catholics. In 1950 there were already 8,000 living in Bielefeld; To ensure pastoral care , the parish, i.e. the division of the parish, was inevitable. The closest parish church for the approximately 1200 parishioners in Brake was in Schildesche , so the decision was made to build their own church. The foundation stone was laid in 1958, and the church building was completed after a year and a half of construction in August 1959.
Furnishing
The approximately four by six meter large choir window shows an abstract design of a ship driving over factories, buildings and mountains, driven by the breath of God, which is supposed to symbolize the church. The viewer should be stimulated to meditate by the symbolism .
The altar was created by the sculptor Johannes Niemeier (Rietberg) in 1986/1987 from Anröchter dolomite. The relief below the Altarmensa (altar plate) shows a wreath of thorns. Flames can be seen in the middle of each of the four sides. The artist thinks of the story from the Old Testament in which God appears to Moses in the burning bush. The altar cross is designed as a square and free-floating wooden cross. The dark 3000 year old bog wood bears a contrasting light figure of Jesus .
The fourteen stations of the cross are represented as monochrome woodcut prints.
Bells
The three cast steel bells were cast in 1963 by the Bochumer Verein für Gusstahlfabrikation (BVG) .
