Holy Cross Church

The Holy Cross Church is a late Gothic building in the south of the city of Burghausen .

history

The rich Burghausen citizen and Lebzelter Michael am Steg donated a chapel and a weekly mass for the lepers in 1397 . His tombstone from 1409 can now be found on the eastern choir wall of the church. The chapel and later church has belonged to the parish of Mehring since 1398 . In the second half of the 15th century, the chapel was replaced by a larger new building, which was built by the master stonemason from Burghausen, Hans Wechselperger. This building was donated by Duchess Hedwig von Niederbayern and consecrated on June 18, 1477 by Auxiliary Bishop Albert Schönhofer from Passau . The high altar from 1656 has been destroyed, but the altarpiece has been preserved in the town museum. In 1953 the crucifixion group was set up instead . The cross, Maria and Johannes from 1709 come from Ferdinand Oxner. The figure of Magdalena from 1768 is by Johann Georg Lindt . The figures on the southern nave wall, presumably from the years 1480 to 1500, were probably still part of the original, Gothic high altar. They represent the hll. Maria, Alban and Katharina. In 1953 the church was renovated and well-preserved frescoes from late Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque were exposed. The fragments of a Way of the Cross in the 2nd and 3rd yoke date from the time it was built. On the left wall in the chancel there is a representation of Christophorus . On the gallery parapet, scenes from the story of Jesus' passion are depicted, which were revised in the Baroque period, with the donor's inscription Lorenz Fögel 1610 . In 1882, an "auction of church objects" from Heiligkreuz was reported in the weekly newspaper, which presumably brought some items of equipment under the hammer.

Building description

The church is an unplastered single-nave tuff square structure. The choir has a 5/8 end to two yokes . The nave has three bays. The west gallery over three pillars has three pointed arches . The sacristy with ribbed vaults in parallel configuration is on the south side. The alliance coat of arms of Hedwig of Poland and Georg of Bavaria is painted on at the end of the choir. The tower is square in plan and then merges into an octagon . A helmet with a pommel and cross is applied to the tower . The architecture suggests the influence of the Braunauer Bauhütte .
