The Talkirche , sometimes also Thalkirche, is a baroque pilgrimage church in the Rehn valley near Münnerstadt ( Lower Franconia ). It bears different names: "Pilgrimage Church to the Holy Cross", "Gnadenkapelle im Retzunger Tal" or "Rhunger Talkirche". The church belongs to the parish of Münnerstadt ( Diocese of Würzburg ) and is consecrated to the Holy Cross . In it a representation of Mary is venerated as a picture of grace .

history

The first documentary mention of the church comes from the year 1360 (in the hall book of the German rulers ); the reason for their edification is obscure. Originally, however, it was not in such a secluded location as it is today, but on the busy road from Würzburg to Saxony - Meiningen (see Via Romea ), which suggests that it has been here on the long route between Münnerstadt and Rannungen since the Middle Ages a hostel with "little church" found. It has been documented since 1449 that a hermit constantly lived near the church. After the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War , the previous building of today's church became unusable and the new building began in 1712 according to plans by the court architect Joseph Greissing . The church was consecrated on August 19, 1716 by the Würzburg Auxiliary Bishop Mayer , probably in connection with the consecration of the Parish Church in Rension .

Nowadays the St. Mark's procession takes place every year at the end of April. It begins at the St. Maria Magdalena Church and leads to the Talkirche. Halfway there, she stops at the Hohe Kreuz and the nearby Kreuzschlepper .

legend

According to a popular legend , the construction of the first chapel goes back to two farmers from Rannungen who were surprised by heavy rain while they were harvesting in the valley. The water accumulated in the narrow valley in such a way that they got stuck with the heavily loaded wagon in the mud and together with the draft animals got into an extremely dangerous situation. That is why they made the vow to build a chapel for Our Lady in the valley if they returned home unharmed with animals and wagons.

Furnishing

The church has three altars in the classical style . On the left side altar is the miraculous image, a copy of a Gothic representation of Our Lady made of wood. It is said to have been moved here in the 19th century from a wooden chapel that was located directly next to the church. Some of the votive offerings exhibited in the church are remarkable . The two bells in the roof turret have the tones g sharp ″ and c ″ ′.

Free altar

On the meadow next to the church there is a stone free altar , above which a larger-than-life crucifixion group from 1941 rises. The work of the Munich sculptor Gottfried Albert depicts the crucified Christ , Saint John , Mary , the mother of Jesus and the two thieves in an expressive style .
