The Holy Cross Church in the Berlin district of Alt-Hohenschönhausen is a Roman Catholic parish church that was built in 1987/88. Your address is Malchower Weg 22–24. It belongs to the dean's office Lichtenberg in the Archdiocese of Berlin .

history

As early as 1907, the Chapel of the Holy Cross in the cemetery on Berliner Straße (today's Konrad-Wolf-Straße ) was consecrated, the building was built according to plans and under the direction of the architect Hermann Bunning . The responsible community Heilig Kreuz was only founded in 1931.

Because of the large number of new building quarters in what was then the Hohenschönhausen district from the 1970s, more and more Catholics moved here. This required the establishment of a community center and the construction of a larger church. After the Bonifatiuswerk from Paderborn had signed a contract with the community for financing, a team of architects from the Building Academy of the GDR planned both a community hall , which opened in 1986, and the church building . Prelate Paul Dissemond laid the foundation stone for the new church on May 23, 1987 . The construction work was carried out by VEB Bau Wismar . The consecration took Joachim Cardinal Meisner before November 13, 1988th The finished design of the building deviates in some details from the original plans, including the cross on the free-standing church tower , which goes back to a proposal by the interior designer Friedrich Press : an oversized cross was formed from clinker bricks along the entire length of the facade of 20 meters and visibly fastened with three huge nails . This design is reminiscent of the crucifixion of Christ .

The cemetery chapel was retained and in 1967 was given a modern interior design by Friedrich Press. It is now, along with the administration building and the cemetery wall, under monument protection .

Sanctuary

After the political change , the church also received the planned bells , which have the following inscriptions: Venite adoremus ('Come, let us adore'), Pax vobis ('Peace be with you') and Ave Maria ('Hail Mary '). The bells were consecrated by Bishop Georg Sterzinsky on May 31, 1990.

In the years 1999/2000 a comprehensive renovation of the church building was carried out.

In 2004 the Holy Cross congregation merged with the congregation of St. Konrad von Parzham in Falkenberg to form the Catholic parish Heilig Kreuz Berlin . The Church of St. Konrad has been a branch church since then .

Furnishing

The interior design followed the suggestions of the artist Friedrich Press, who put the details under the motto The celebration of Easter vigil.

The altar wall in the octagonal interior receives daylight from windows arranged high above. Together with the light from the ceiling lamp in the middle of the nave, this symbolizes the glory of Easter . The baptismal font , also designed by Press, has a direct connection to a water pipe.

Worth mentioning are an original Russian icon , which commemorates the 1000th anniversary of Christianity in Russia, as well as a menorah , which commemorates the Reichskristallnacht and is intended to promote Christian-Jewish dialogue.

In November 2004 the organ was consecrated, which the organ building company Friedrich Fleiter from Münster had made and which has a brochure by Wilfried Statt .

Bells

The three-part bell was cast by Schilling in Apolda in 1989 . The smallest bell is the angelus bell and rings with bell 2 at weekday masses. The big bell is reserved for Sundays and public holidays as well as weddings and funerals.

Church uses and community work

The Moscow Patriarch held a Marian mass in the church on September 8, 1990 and preached about the expressiveness of the icon .

In addition to church services, concerts also take place in the church building or the church interior serves as a meeting place for Berliners and foreigners. For 1993, for example, the chronicle reports on events with Bosnian war refugees and asylum seekers.
