Raphael Statt OCist (* 1958 in Kleinmachnow as Wilfried Statt ) is a German monk and sculptor .

Life

Wilfried Statt grew up in Teltow and learned the profession of plasterer from 1975 to 1977 . From 1981 to 1986 he studied sculpture at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art and graduated with a diploma. He completed a subsequent aspirantur at the same university in 1989 with a master’s degree . From 1988 to 1990 he also had a teaching position at the art college.

Since 1989 he has lived and worked as a freelance artist in Stahnsdorf . In addition to the design for the GDR's last commemorative coin , he created a large number of works, including for public spaces. This includes, for example, the design of a fountain on the market in Teltow or the Otto Lilienthal monument in Derwitz . From 1991 to 2003 he was teaching at the Potsdam Art School . In 2004 he was appointed to the Commission for Sacred Art and Church Building in the Archdiocese of Berlin .

In 2005 he entered the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz near Vienna and took the religious name Raphael. He made his solemn profession in September 2009.

After the novitiate he was again artistically active at the request of the abbot Gregor Henckel-Donnersmarck . In October 2015, in the entrance area of ​​the Philosophical-Theological College Benedict XVI. a life-size bronze statue of Pope Benedict XVI. revealed.

Raphael Statt was one of the monks who, under the name The Cistercian Monks of Stift Heiligenkreuz , achieved top positions in the music charts as a choral schola with recordings of Gregorian chants .
