The monastery Stiepel , a monastery of Cistercian in Bochum district Stiepel , was founded in 1988 and is a priory of the pin Heiligenkreuz , a Cistercian abbey in Austria . The founding of the monastery was initiated by the first bishop of the Ruhr diocese , Franz Cardinal Hengsbach .

The monastery church is at the same time a place of pilgrimage to the Virgin Mary for the miraculous image of the "Sorrowful Mother of Stiepel" and as such the only place of pilgrimage to Mary in the diocese. The building wings of the monastery are arranged in a U-shape around the pilgrimage courtyard. An outside altar opens to the west into the landscape. The monk cells are in the attic; their position can be recognized by the corresponding dormer window. A leased restaurant ("Klosterhof") is attached to the monastery.

The Latin Liturgy of the Hours of the monastic community and masses in the church are public.

history

“On the feast of the holy abbot Bernhard von Clairvaux in 1988 four Cistercians from the Abbey of Heiligenkreuz in Lower Austria were sent by their abbot Gerhard Hradil to found a monastery in the diocese of Essen, where they were at the BMV church under the first prior appointed Father Beda Zilch Matris Dolorosae began monastic life in Stiepel ... "

This is how the document written on parchment begins, which Cardinal Hengsbach sunk into the foundation stone of the newly built Cistercian monastery on May 3, 1989. Since the founding, numerous entries have taken place, so that the foundation can be considered a success after 25 years. An elevation to the abbey is still pending.

Today the monks look after the pilgrimage, perform the solemn choral prayer according to the Cistercian tradition, are responsible for the parish, are active as pastors in neighboring parishes and act as spiritual guides, not least for the students of the nearby Ruhr University .
