history

The project was developed by the Bratislava architect Ignaz Feigler the Younger , and the foundation stone was laid on May 13, 1859. The original chapel was consecrated on September 14, 1860, on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross , by the Archbishop of Gran Ján Scitovský and was intended as a cemetery chapel from the beginning. The single-nave sacral building has neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance features.

After the burials in the Andreas cemetery ended in the 1950s, the chapel lost its function and was then only used as a warehouse. In 1972 the sacred building was first leased by the Roman Catholic Church to the Greek Catholic Church and later given away to them. At the same time, a reconstruction took place in order to be able to hold services in the Byzantine rite and the converted church was consecrated on October 29, 1972 by Auxiliary Bishop Vasiľ Hopko . In 1996 it was rebuilt again, the construction work particularly affected the sacristy and an iconostasis was installed. On the walls to the left and right of the iconostasis there are icons by Pavol Peter Gojdič and Vasiľ Hopko, and beneath them are reliquary shrines with the relics of the two beatified.

Since January 30th, 2008 the church has been the cathedral of the Bratislava eparchy. Services are held in Old Church Slavonic , partly in Slovak.
