The Holy Cross Church in Zellerau

The Holy Cross Church is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Zellerau district of Würzburg . It is located on Sedanstrasse at the corner of Friedrichstrasse and is a protected monument with the file number D-6-63-000-165 of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation .

history

The parish church Heiligkreuz was built by the architect Michael Niedermeier . The foundation stone was laid on August 5, 1934, and Bishop Matthias Ehrenfried was consecrated on September 15, 1935. The church roof was destroyed in the bombing raid on Würzburg on March 16, 1945 .

The exterior of the church was renovated in 1957/1958, the redesign of the choir and the interior renovation in 1967 were under the direction of Walter Schilling. The last complete overhaul was in 1985.

Building description

architecture

The church is a three-aisled basilica with a gable roof and an integrated rectangular tower with a hip roof and high lantern. The plastered building with a lion portal shows limestone integrations and bears the image of the Raising of the Cross by Emperor Constantine by Willy Jakob from 1935 in sgraffito technique on the main facade .

inner space

A bronze sculpture of the Returning Christ with a tabernacle by Otto Sonnleitner has been hanging on the choir wall since 1967 and a bronze cast of a Madonna and Child created by Otto Sonnleitner in 1961 for the St. Hedwig's Church in Bayreuth has been on the left front side of the central nave . A red marble relief by Fried Heuler from 1935 on the pulpit depicts Christ in the midst of the apostles . On the back wall of the right aisle is a wooden Madonna by Fried Heuler. On the back wall of the left aisle there is a wooden Sacred Heart figure.

The 14 stations of the cross made of bronze come from Sebastian Putz from Bad Brückenau. Above the organ loft, two windows depicting the judgment of Christ based on designs by Karl Clobes from Tückelhausen were installed. In the weekday chapel there are four more windows by the artist.

The church is described by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments (BLfD) as follows: "Three-aisled basilica with a gable roof and an integrated rectangular tower with hipped roof and high lantern, plastered building with limestone structures, lion portal and wall painting, Michael Niedermeier, 1934/1935" and bears the file number D-6-63-000-165.

Würzburg Kantorei

The Würzburger Kantorei was founded in autumn 2002 in the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche. It is an association of children and youth choirs consisting of several age groups , which is headed by the Dean's Chantor Anke Willwohl.

The choir community first achieved fame through regional concerts, for example in Aschaffenburg , Kitzingen or Miltenberg . In the meantime, there have also been regular appearances in other parts of Germany, such as in Aachen or Cologne Cathedral, as well as in other European countries.

Due to the large number of singers and the different levels of performance, the rehearsals take place in different age groups. In total, four choirs are formed, which appear on different dates. For boys and girls under the age of 14 there are mostly 60-minute rehearsals in the A, B and pre-choirs. Older members sing in the so-called youth choir of the Würzburger Kantorei or later in the chamber choir . The older members sing in the full SATB register. Around 60 children and young people are active in the choir. The choirs have a total of more than 100 people.

organ

The organ in the Heilig-Kreuz church was built in 1998 by the Bonn organ building company JOHANNES KLAIS (Opus 1764) - the 35 registers are distributed over 3 manuals and pedal.

Peal

In the tower there are four bells, three from the Czudnochowsky company from Erding and the smallest from 1934 from the Ulrich foundry from Apolda :

1. Trinity bell: strike dis', weight 1,680 kg
2. Cross bell: strike e ', weight 950 kg
3. Our Lady Bell: Strike F sharp ', weight 650 kg
4. Joseph's bell: strike a ', weight 500 kg

Parish community

The parish together with the parish of St. Elisabeth in the Zellerau form the parish community of Heiligkreuz and St. Elisabeth.
