The parish church Hirschbach is a former castle chapel in the former Hirschbach Castle in the market town of Hirschbach in the Gmünd district in Lower Austria . The parish church , consecrated to the Patronage of the Exaltation of the Cross , belongs to the deanery Waidhofen an der Thaya in the diocese of St. Pölten . The church is a listed building ( list entry ).

history

In 1332 a castle chapel was mentioned in a document. The chapel was expanded into a Protestant castle church in the fourth quarter of the 16th century. After a renovation, the church was consecrated again in 1723. In 1741 the church was elevated to a parish church. In 1836/1837 and after a fire in 1868 the church was structurally changed. In 1896 there was a renovation. In 1935 and 1962 the church was restored.

In 1390 the patronage of the Holy Cross was named, later the patronage of the discovery of the cross until 1963, now the patronage of the exaltation of the cross.

architecture

The square facade tower presented was built in 1836/1837 and raised in 1869 contains a round-arched Renaissance column portal from the fourth quarter of the 16th century. The portal shows a relief of the resurrection of Jesus Christ under a triangular gable between pine cones . The west facade from 1836 is simple.

In the north of the church there is a two-storey sacristy extension around 1620 with the Streun - Scherffenberg coat of arms .

The one-bay choir with a three-eighth closure and a crypt protrudes from the west wing of the castle.

The three-bay nave from 1723, the east bay was added in 1836/1837, received after the fire of 1868 transversely oblong square vaults over belt arches on pillar templates. The sacristy door was built around 1800. The three-axis organ loft around 1840 has a flat ceiling on column arcades and longitudinally positioned candle arches, the swinging parapet with floral motifs is from the fourth quarter of the 16th century. The retracted triumphal arch on pillars is flanked left and right by baroque rectangular windows.

Furnishing

The high altar with a free-standing cafeteria contains reliefs of the victims of Abraham and Melchizedek and bears the side figures of John the Baptist and Rochus from 1847. The altar bears a neo-baroque tabernacle from 1950 based on a design by the architect Josef Friedl . On the apse wall hangs the altar sheet Crucifixion of Christ by Martin Johann Schmidt (1771).

The organ from 1911 by Max Jakob was rebuilt in 1964.
