The Hirschbach Castle is a former castle in the northwest corner of the town square in the village of Hirschbach in the district of Gmünd in Lower Austria .

history

A castle was mentioned in a document in 1280 and was owned by the Topler until 1470. From 1480 to 1612 the castle belonged to the Streun , in the fourth quarter of the 16th century the four-wing building with octagonal corner towers and the extension of the castle church were built. From 1612 to 1626 the castle belonged to Ulrich Christoph von Scherffenberg . From 1626 to 1760 the Herberstein . In 1760 the castle and Count Julius von Veterani went to the rule of Kirchberg am Walde . The castle was uninhabited from 1783 and was divided into residential buildings in 1843. The towers and some of the upper floors were removed.

The almost square four-wing complex contains today's parish church of Hirschbach in the middle of the west wing . Today one and two-story houses stand around a square courtyard. In the former east wing, in the middle of the axis of the west-facing church, the barrel-vaulted entrance has been preserved.

In 1867 a school was established in house number 66. The school received a new facade in 1877/1878, the rusticated arched portal is from the construction time of the castle. At house number 64 there are figural niches with the Saints Sebastian and Rochus .
