Franz Eppel

Franz Eppel (born September 24, 1921 in Vienna ; † September 14, 1976 there ) was an Austrian art historian , monument conservator and author of art guides.

Eppel studied art history and prehistoric archeology, history and German literature. After working as a university assistant and in the private sector, he joined the Federal Monuments Office and from 1962, succeeding Josef Zykan until 1974, he was the state curator for Lower Austria. In addition to the preservation of monuments, his focus was on the historical technology of the fine arts, i.e. H. the manufacturing and working methods that lead to the work of art. Since 1965 he lectured after falling out at the Universities of Vienna and Salzburg habilitation had. 1973 Eppel received the chair for art history at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. In addition to specialist literature, he published several art guides as part of the Austrian art monograph, some of which are still sold today.
