Holy Cross Church (Berlin-Kreuzberg)
The Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche is a Protestant church in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district . It is located on Zossener Strasse just before the Landwehr Canal , diagonally across from the cemeteries in front of Hallesches Tor . It was built between 1885 and 1888 according to plans by the master builder Johannes Otzen under the supervision of Robert Kleinau . Since February 1, 2000, the former Heilig-Kreuz parish has been united with the Passion parish in the Evangelical parish Heilig-Kreuz-Passion of the parish of Berlin Stadtmitte .
history
The Holy Cross Church, built in Gothic form from 1885 to 1888 , was named after the biblical story Church of the Holy Cross and reminds of the proximity to Berlin's Kreuzberg . It consists of a nave and a transept with a crossing tower, the dome of which begins at a height of 19 meters. After the foundation stone was laid on 18 April 1885, the construction on 27 October 1888 at the presence emperor was Wilhelm II. And his wife Augusta Victoria inaugurated which donated the altar.
By Allied air raids in World War II destroyed the church was rebuilt in a simplified form 1951-1959. Refurbished for the first time from 1987 onwards, in 1995 the architects group Wassertorplatz (including Uwe Evers, Wolfgang Göschel, Herbert Rebel, Joachim von Rosenberg) carried out a comprehensive renovation with conversion for both ecclesiastical and secular use.
Before the Second World War, the steeple had a long spire that gave it a total height of 81 meters. The rebuilt tower does not have this top and measures 59.3 meters.
The church interior now also houses modern works of art such as colored glass windows by Johannes Schreiter and a triptych Christ in the Holocaust by Ismond Rosen from 1996. The adjoining church garden has a small waterfall.
A comprehensive account of the history of the church and the community appeared in 1995 in the monograph Kreuz und Pickelhaube (see under literature ).
On October 27, 2013, the congregation celebrated the 125th anniversary of the dedication of the church with a festival. The festival service was held by the Berlin State Bishop Markus Dröge .
use
The church building with its extensions can be used for events with up to 550 participants. The German School Prize was awarded here in 2014 . Several smaller rooms and a church café are grouped around the large room, which is open on all sides. Akanthus Kulturmanagement is responsible for the events .
The Heilig-Kreuz-Passionsgemeinde is heavily involved in neighborhood work such as helping the homeless, the poor and refugees. The "hall troop", responsible for the construction and dismantling work as well as the supervision of the events, is partly made up of people supervised.
organ
The organ was made in the years 1870/1871 as op. 553 by the brothers Elias (1805–1881) and George G. Hook (1807–1880) from Boston for the First Unitarian Church in Woburn / USA . The instrument did not have its own case, but was in a niche behind the altar. The organ had 38 registers and a glockenspiel on three manual works and a pedal and was equipped with Barker machines. The actions were mechanical.
In 1991 the Kreuz-Kirchengemeinde bought the historical instrument from Woburn and commissioned the organ building company Hermann Eule with the restoration and installation in the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche. In the course of this, the gold bronzing of the prospect pipes was removed, revealing the original ornaments on the pipes. The solo work is directly behind the "Great", the swell ("Swell") is above the solo work. The slider chest instrument has 38 registers on three manuals and a pedal. In October 2001 the organ was consecrated again.
