History of the Passion Church

Altar, organ and brick pulpit

The Passionskirche was built from 1905–1908 as the third church of the Holy Cross community in the Tempelhof suburb according to plans by the building councilor Theodor Astfalck in the neo-Romanesque style according to the principles of the Wiesbaden program from bricks in the monastery format . It has a square floor plan with a tower in the middle. Together with the four towers, which are set in the corners of the square floor plan, the base is given the shape of a Greek cross , and the overall structure looks like a castle. A large circular chandelier with colored glass in Art Nouveau style hangs centrally under the ceiling - a donation from Siemens . The mosaic in the chancel was made by the Puhl & Wagner company .

Although the church was damaged in World War II in 1944 , almost all of the original furnishings have been preserved. 1951–1953 the war damage could be repaired and the church restored with modest means, from 1957 the work was continued. During this time, the Passionskirche received an organ from the master organ builder Karl Ludwig Schuke . In 1967 the three large windows could be decorated with stained glass on the subjects of Gethsemane , Crucifixion and Descent from the Cross .

In 1989, the community received the Ferdinand von Quast Medal for innovations to preserve the monument . With the extensive renovation work from 1992 onwards, the church was made accessible to the disabled , underfloor heating under the new terracotta tiles ensures year-round use of the premises, and lighting and sound technology has been installed; the walls, vaulted ceilings and the windows received soundproofing. Tower roofs were covered with colored glazed tiles that were made according to historical models.

When thorough renovation measures took place in the residential areas surrounding the church and there were squatting, the pastor and the parish council got involved in this social area and tried to find peaceful solutions. That was the beginning of an expanded social and cultural commitment.

In addition to church services, readings, lectures, exhibitions (e.g. by Osama Said ), discussions, conferences and concerts of various musical styles ( folk music , rock , jazz , classical, etc.) take place. Well-known artists who performed here included No Angels , Tangerine Dream , Subway to Sally , Zakk Wylde and last instance . Also, the live album Psychometry by Anne Clark was taken here. The church can be rented as a venue. The entire church has space for around 720 people.

The Finnish Congregation Berlin also holds its services in the Passionskirche . The Finland Center e. V. for Germany has its seat in the former parish hall of the Passion Church. The current pastor is Päivi Lukkari.
