St. Bartholomew Church (Berlin)
The Protestant St. Bartholomew's Church , a Grade II listed neo-Gothic hall church from the mid-19th century, is located on the Peace Road 1 corner Otto-Braun-Strasse , opposite the entrance to the Friedrichshain park in Berlin district of Friedrichshain . The Bartholomäusgemeinde together with the Advent-Zachäus-Kirchgemeinde and the Immanuel-Kirchgemeinde form the parish district Am Prenzlauer Berg in the parish of Berlin Stadtmitte .
Building history
A new church in the Königstadt became necessary after the parish of the church at Königstor - the future Bartholomäus parish - had been separated from the parish of St. George's Church in 1854 . King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Personally took over the patronage for the construction of the church and donated a considerable sum of money.
The church named after St. Bartholomew was built on the former vineyard at Königstor northeast of Alexanderplatz , five meters above the street, between 1854 and 1858 . The church building is a three-aisled brick building in Gothic-style forms based on a type design by Friedrich August Stüler revised by the master builder Friedrich Adler . The church was on 13 October 1858 Participation of the future Emperor I. Wilhelm inaugurated .
In 1883 the facade was changed, instead of terracotta cladding , the walls were faced with clinker bricks. In 1905 the church had to be fundamentally renovated due to considerable structural damage. During the Second World War , the building was badly damaged: all roofs and vaults collapsed and the inventory was lost. Between 1952 and 1957 a simplified reconstruction took place under the direction of the architect Willi Nerger , who united the roof structures under a flatter gable roof . The interior was given a flat ceiling and, apart from the pointed arched windows , looks more neoclassical . In the 1980s, the "Peace Library / Anti-War Museum" of the Evangelical Church was housed in separate room zones under the galleries .

As part of the construction of a Protestant center of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Oberlausitz (EKBO) as the seat of the Berlin Consistory took place on the premises of the Berlin Mission Society at George Church Street in the years 1997 to 2000, Dieter Ketterer a basic repair and restoration of the church , when the "crowning glory" was procured three new bronze bells and a church tower clock. Today the St. Bartholomew Church serves as a place of worship for the St. Bartholomew Congregation. architecture
The three-aisled nave originally had three parallel gable roofs . At the central nave, a five-sided closed includes choir and two equally wide aisles. The high west tower - octagonal on the upper floors - has a square basic shape. In the bell storey there are pointed arched openings, which are closed at the top by a pointed helmet . Two tall, open vestibules flank the lower tower entrance. Since the church is on a hill, Stüler used the differences in terrain for a staircase that leads to a three-part church entrance hall.
Furnishing
altar
In the chancel there are three paintings showing the crucified Jesus and the disciples Stephen and Bartholomew (Nathanael). They were made by Johann Chrysanth Bollenrath 1737–1742 for the Mariengemeinde, as was another oil painting depicting the Descent from the Cross. The altar window is by Gerhard Olbrich from 1957. It shows a scene from the 4th chapter of the Revelation of John .
organ
The organ is a work by Hans Joachim Schuke (Potsdam), which was inaugurated on October 31, 1965.
