Karl Gustav Rümelin
Karl Gustav Rümelin (later Charles Reemelin ; born May 19, 1814 in Heilbronn , † January 16, 1896 in Cincinnati , Ohio ) was an American politician , farmer, writer , lawyer and insurance salesman of German origin.
Life
Karl Gustav Rümelin was the son of the " specialty dealer " Benjamin Rümelin. He immigrated to the United States when he was 18. With the American brig "Isabella" he arrived in Philadelphia after 87 days .
After emigrating in 1832, Rümelin changed his name to Charles Reemelin. He was a pioneer for Carl Schurz and politically active as a supporter of the Democratic Party . He was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1844 , became a member of the Ohio Senate in 1846, and a member of the Convention for the new state constitution in 1850.
“With him, the Germanness of America lost one of its most important representatives, the United States lost a citizen whose outstanding qualities and loyalty to his adopted home even the Anglo-American press recognized without reservation. Von Rümelin was rightly said that hardly any of the Germans who emigrated to the United States fought the conflict between two souls, the conflict between attachment to the old country and love for their new home, with such equanimity as he did. It was granted to him to bring the best Swabian culture into harmony with a new environment. If anyone, he has refuted the heresy, as if Germany had only given inferior natures, those who failed at home, to abroad, and Swabia can proudly underline what the New York state newspaper wrote on the day of Rumelin's death: Karl Rumelin is to be counted among the best men in German-American history .
