St. Marien Church Schweinitz

history

The foundation stone for the former Church of the Holy Cross was laid on July 1, 1385. Presumably, a Romanesque stone church was located on the site of the current church as early as the 11th century . Parts of this structure are said to have been reused on the semicircular apse . During the Thirty Years War , the building was partially destroyed by fire. After the reconstruction, the church was renamed Sankt Marien. The southern cross leg has been preserved from the former cross shape. There are records of Martin Luther's preaching in the church from the 16th century .

The church is a plastered hall with a choir and apse as well as a square west tower. The choir and nave of the building were originally the same width. In the 17th century the ship was extended to the north. A square sacristy annex is located on the south side of the choir. The entrance to the patron s box and the prayer rooms built at the end of the 17th century is north of the choir. The west-facing tower of the church has an octagonal structure with a Welscher hood , lantern and a pointed helmet . Representations of bearded masks are attached to the apex of the plastered arcades. The two lower floors of the tower are made of lawn iron and bricks, the baroque elevation is made of half-timbered construction.

There is a two- bay groin vault in the choir . The apse and the triumphal arch are pointed arches. There is a cell vault in the southern extension. In the south-east corner of the ship, a remnant of a vault approach indicates a former vaulted ceiling. Today the baroque renovated hall has a wooden ceiling. There are galleries on the west and north sides . The altarpiece dates from 1722. This was made by the Wittenberg sculptor Peter Wollschläger and shows the resurrection of Christ in the middle part. The altar cross was made around 1714. From sandstone existing baptism of the church dates back to 1758. At the cuppa baptism are two coats of arms and shell-shaped ornaments attached. The wooden pulpit with a sound cover dates from the middle of the 17th century . The evangelists are painted in the fields between the corner pillars. Six patronage boxes, some of which are glazed, and the stately stalls are located in the church's choir. The organ of the church dates from the end of the 17th / beginning of the 18th century.

Funerary monuments and epitaphs

A baroque inscription tombstone is located next to the altar of the church. This was built for the pastor Gottfried Hoffmann, who died in 1734. A classical grave monument for Georg Gottfries Eckhardt and his wife Wilhelmine Caroline is located next to the staircase to the manorial stalls. Next to the pulpit is a baroque wall epitaph from 1721. It depicts a putto with an inscription panel framed by clouds and flight of angels . A similarly designed epitaph is located in front of the west gallery. On the north wall in the outside area there are further baroque tombs.
