Holy Cross Church

Heilig Kreuz is the Catholic parish church in Veltheim (Ohe) , a municipality in the Wolfenbüttel district in Lower Saxony . Your parish of the same name belongs to the dean's office in Braunschweig. The church named after the cross of Jesus is located in Wasserweg 2B and is the oldest post-war church in the Hildesheim diocese that is still in operation.

history

As a result of the Second World War , the number of Catholics in the area around Braunschweig, which has been Protestant since the Reformation, increased considerably due to the influx of refugees and displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Empire . In the post-war period, a Catholic parish was formed in Veltheim. Catholic church books have been kept in Veltheim since 1946 . The church was built in 1949 and consecrated on November 6, 1949 by Bishop Joseph Godehard Machens . After the Marienkirche in Buxtehude, it was the second new church to be built in the Diocese of Hildesheim after the Second World War. Before that, from 1948, only a few chapels were consecrated. In 1952 the parish hall was built next to the church. On January 1, 1958, the parish of Veltheim an der Ohe was established. Since 1988/89 there is a tribe of the same name of the German Scouting Association Saint George at Holy Cross .

On November 1st, 2006 the churches of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus in Cremlingen and St. Bonifatius in Weddel also came to the parish of Hl. Kreuz , their parish of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus was abolished. As a result, the number of members of the parish Hl. Kreuz doubled to around 2200. On February 15, 2014, the branch church of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus in Cremlingen was profaned , but the parsonage and parsonage in Cremlingen remain for the parish.

Architecture and equipment

The church, located around 134 meters above sea level , was built according to plans by Josef Fehlig ; its small, cross-crowned bell gable has two bells . The church is equipped with 14 stations of the cross , as well as statues of St. Anthony of Padua , preaching to the fish , and Joseph of Nazareth . A relief depicts the Lord's Supper , a stained glass window shows St. Christopher . On the back wall of the chancel there is a crucifix , below which, embedded in the wall, is the tabernacle . A dove of the Holy Spirit is attached above the sanctuary. In the east aisle there is a copy of the miraculous image “Our Lady of Perpetual Help” and the baptismal font . The Lady Chapel was added later, it has a relief of the Queen of Peace and a statue of the Good Shepherd . There is a mission cross in the garden , on which the people's missions have been registered since 1951. Furthermore, a shrine commemorating the World War II dead and missing .
