Weddel is a district of the municipality of Cremlingen in the Wolfenbüttel district in Lower Saxony .

history

The name Weddel is related to the word "Watt"; This means the area, which was originally characterized by wetlands, in which Weddel is a pass “to wade through”. From a Germanic basic form * wadil- or * wadul- it developed to Wedele until it was first mentioned around the year 1226 and changed over the centuries from Weddele to Weddel .

On March 1, 1974, Weddel was incorporated into the municipality of Cremlingen.

The Evangelical Lutheran Christ Church is located on Kirchstrasse, its parish belongs to the Königslutter provost . The parish also includes the Paul-Gerhardt-Haus next to the church, a former school building built in 1897, which was used as a parish hall after its renovation in 2015, and the day care center Noah's Ark on Nordstrasse.

The Catholic St. Bonifatius Church was built in 1991 on Ahornallee, it is the youngest church in the Braunschweig deanery and today belongs to the parish of Heilig Kreuz in Veltheim .

The local council consists of eleven seats, five of which are occupied by the SPD , four by the CDU and two by the Greens .

The local mayor is Harald Koch.

The coat of arms is divided obliquely to the left. In the upper left half you can see half a red lion with black claws on a white background, in the lower right half you can see a golden linden leaf on a blue background.

Weddel owns the Erich Kästner School, which accepts students from grades 1 to 4 from Cremlingen, Klein Schöppenstedt and Weddel.

The Weddel (Braunschw) train station is located south of the village.

The K141 connects the place in the south with the federal highway 1 as well as with Cremlingen.
