Cremlingen is the main town and the second largest district of the municipality of Cremlingen .

history

Cremlingen was first mentioned in 1296 as "Kremmelinghe". The current name Cremlingen developed from the 17th century onwards through various intermediate forms such as Cremnige (1316) or Kremmling (1570). The place name is one for the region -ingen settlement, with a basic form * kram-l-ingi . The meaning of the defining word is controversial, in which both a personal name Kremo and a root * kram- 'moist' are assumed (see Cramme ).

In the course of Lower Saxony's municipal reform on March 1, 1974, the previous municipality of Cremlingen was merged with the neighboring municipalities of Abbenrode , Destedt , Gardessen , Hemkenrode , Hordorf , Klein Schöppenstedt , Schandelah , Schulenrode and Weddel to form a new municipality of Cremlingen.
